The JISC Committee for Awareness, Liaison and Training (JCALT)
commissioned
this study as a means to investigate the human and organisational issues resulting from the introduction
of networked learning in educational institutions, in both Higher and Further Education.
While there have been a number of studies looking at the impact of networked learning on teachers
and learners, as well as at the cost effectiveness of networked learning, the impact on administration,
management and support services have been largely neglected.
In the 21st century, large-scale networked learning has become a real option for educational institutions, as it is technically comparatively easy to achieve. It is therefore essential to assess its impact on all institutional levels so that institutions can make informed choices about whether or not to embrace networked learning. This study aims to contribute to this decision by offering a detailed analysis of the impact of networked learning on educational institutions, and by distilling the results into practical guidelines for decision makers.
