ESCALATE Resources

Dr Elisabet Weedon, a researcher at the LEARN unit and a lecturer at Perth College is the lead researcher in a team of researchers and educators collaborating on an ESCALATE project called 'Reflective Journalling for development of abilities'. This research project is funded through a small grant awarded by ESCALATE.

Brief project outline:

Supporting students developing reflective abilities.

This project centres on the need to develop the ability in staff to support students in their development of reflective abilities, and on the achievement of that goal through disseminating the now proven practice in one well-established and evaluated module at level 3 in the UHIMI BA (Soc Sci) degree. Since this module is being developed as an online, networked degree module accessible to several degree programmes as from September 2002, it seems opportune to assemble and pilot staff development and support materials for the tutors who will now be recruited to facilitate reflective journalling, and others in other establishments who may well wish to profit from the same resource materials. We have found that the journalling that the students undertake benefits from facilitative input from staff in the early stages. We have therefore recognised that our need to develop a larger pool of staff with the skills to become engaged with the development of reflection amongst students, in a constructivist rather than an instructional style, might well have wider relevance and use.
