  • SWELL - Scottish Workforce Empowerment for Lifelong Learners

Scottish Workforce Empowerment for Lifelong Learners (SWELL) is the name of the Equal Theme E project which is being led by the Scottish Further Education Unit (SFEU). The research undertaken by LEARN is co-ordinated through UHI and aims to answer the following questions:

    • What barriers do disadvantaged groups face in finding and progressing in employment?
    • How can these barriers be overcome?
    • What is the role of community networks, especially networks of learning centres in rural areas, in overcoming barriers?
Project co-ordinator: Iain Morrison, UHI (based at Highland Theological College - Dingwall)
Project officer: Tomas Nilsson
  • JISC

JISC (the Joint Information Systems Committee): The Impact of Large-scale Networked Learning on Educational Institutions

This JISC funded study will investigate how the introduction of large-scale networked learning across an institution makes a difference to the management of that institution. The project is being undertaken by a partnership of UHI Millennium Institute, Bradford University and SFEU (Scottish Further Education Unit). The study will investigate the impact of large-scale networked learning on:

    • Management and administration
    • Quality assurance monitoring and evaluation
    • Staffing and collaboration
    • Development of learning resources
    • Infrastructure and student support services
Project manager: Elisabet Weedon

  • ESCALATE

ESCALATE: 'Reflective Journalling for the Development of Abilities: Developing and piloting resource materials, both for staff development and for support of facilitative tutors' This project centres on the need to develop the ability in staff to support students in their development of reflective abilities, and on the achievement of that goal through disseminating the now proven practice in one well-established and evaluated module at level 3 in the UHIMI BA (Soc Sci) degree. The project will develop, pilot and evaluate a resource pack for staff, students and staff developers, which will be made available to other practitioners in other institutions.

    Project Manager: Elisabet Weedon

  • PPCs

    PPCs (Personal and Professional Capabilities)
    PDP (Personal Development Planning)

The development of generic transferable skills has been recognised as an integral part of a graduate education for many years. The approach used at UHI focuses on both PPCs and PDP. The LEARN Unit is involved in both the development of strategies to support staff and students developing generic skills and in evaluating the impact of these strategies.
  • Community Learning Networks in Northern Periphery Areas II

One of the biggest challenges faced by educators who support students in remote locations was the feeling of isolation and the lack of opportunity to speak to others in similar situations. This Community Learning Network project will address these issues through the creation of:

    • A virtual learning community designed to facilitate the development of a meaningful community of practice amongst those working in learning centres and other forms of community education in remote northern regions
    • Online modules for Continuing Professional Development (CPD) on 'Supporting Remote Learners' and 'Northern Heritage'

  • ADAPT

ADAPT: Learning in Networked Communities (LINC)

The LINC project was an ambitious undertaking to develop networks of community learning across the Highlands and Islands of Scotland, collaborating with Learning Centres and other local learning networks and to develop and deliver online courses to a wide range of people employed in local Small and Medium Sized Enterprises (SMEs). The LEARN Unit was involved in providing the staff development for this project and undertook the internal evaluation of LINC.
  • ToolCIT

ToolCIT was one of the SCOTCIT projects, funded by SHEFC to develop resources for staff and staff developers in Scottish HEIs to support the use of C & IT in higher education. ToolCIT was designed to help lecturers make decisions about the use of C & IT in their teaching and learning. It provides a range of tools to help people make appropriate decisions about the use of technology in their teaching.
  • Roundtable

    Roundtables and Flashlight

This JISC funded project implemented, analysed and evaluated the Roundtable Methodology and Flashlight Program in three different educational institutions in the United Kingdom. A Roundtable brings together a wide-ranging group of individuals in an academic institution to direct and support learning technology initiatives. Flashlight is an evaluation toolkits designed to help institutions obtain timely information about Learning Technologies.
